Tacloban Community Shelter

Where: Tacloban, Leyte, Philippines
When: 2020
Status: Proposed
Typology: Civic & Emergency Architecture
In the years after Typhoon Yolanda, the need for spaces that could shelter, support, and bring people together became clear. We designed a civic structure for the community that was accessible, adaptable, and made with materials close to home.

Bamboo became our starting point. Its strength, renewability, and local presence made it the right choice. We studied airflow and heat, shaping the form to cool naturally. The idea is to have this space for gathering, for relaxation, and even for protection. The design draws from vernacular traditions, not as nostalgia, but as a proven response to place and climate.
